FIBRE DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Forestry jobsite with logging equipment and Estrea Solutions branding.

Northern Vancouver Island within the Regional District of Mount Waddington

This role is being recruited on behalf of a confidential employer operating Northern Vancouver Island within the Regional District of Mount Waddington. Full company details will be shared with shortlisted candidates.

Forestry has changed. Fibre is harder to find, margins are tighter, and expectations are higher. This role is for someone who understands that reality and wants to help build something practical, local, and long-term.

Living and Working in Community

This role is about more than managing fibre operations.

The successful candidate will become part of a close-knit Northern Vancouver Island community where relationships matter, people know each other, and your actions have a direct impact on the people, businesses, and communities around you.

Looking for someone who understands that forestry is not just about moving fibre. It is about supporting local employment, contributing to economic opportunity, building strong working relationships, and helping create a sustainable future for the region.

Candidates should consider not only the professional opportunity this role offers, but also the opportunity to become an active member of the community.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Live in the region
  • Build relationships with local residents, contractors, businesses, and Indigenous communities
  • Contribute positively both in and outside of the workplace
  • Be visible, present, and engaged where they live and work

This position is best suited for someone who values community, enjoys building meaningful relationships, and understands that long-term success comes from being engaged where you live and work.

About the Role

This role is with a Northern Vancouver Island Indigenous forest licensee supported by a small, experienced management team.

This position reports to the General Manager.

You are responsible for the full lifecycle of fibre supply under license, from identifying opportunities in the bush through to harvesting, delivery, and sales.

Fibre includes the full spectrum of products, including:

  • Waste
  • Biomass
  • Residual fibre
  • Prime logs
  • Value-added and specialty products

Forestry has changed significantly in recent years. This role requires someone who understands current challenges and can build and deliver a successful fibre program while meeting operational and business goals.

You are accountable for ensuring fibre is sourced, developed, and moved to market safely and efficiently.

This is a hands-on role. You will perform work across the fibre cycle, not just coordinate or supervise it. This includes direct involvement in inventory, evaluation, cruising, waste and residue surveying, scaling, and quality control.

You are expected to be in the field working with contractors, crews, and partners. This is not an office-only position.

What This Role Actually Does

In this role, you will be responsible for building and moving fibre from opportunity to delivery.

This means you will:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop local and Indigenous crews while working alongside them
  • Manage fibre supply within the responsibilities of a forest licence holder
  • Identify and develop fibre opportunities before harvest
  • Be present in the field to monitor quality, volumes, safety, and progress
  • Coordinate harvesting, cruising, waste, hauling, and delivery with the management team
  • Perform work across the full fibre cycle, including inventory, evaluation, cruising, waste and residue surveying, scaling, and quality control
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with licence holders, contractors, partners, woodlot operators, buyers, crews, and the management team
  • Track volumes, inventory, fibre movement, pricing, allocation, and sales flow
  • Maintain clear and accurate operational records
  • Solve problems in real time and keep work moving safely and efficiently

What Sets This Role Apart

This is not a coordination or oversight role.

You are expected to:

  • Be in the bush and involved in the work
  • Perform work across the fibre cycle, not just supervise it
  • Solve problems directly, not from a desk
  • Build relationships that secure fibre supply
  • Take ownership of results from start to finish

This role will not suit candidates looking for a coordination-only or office-based position.

Leadership and Culture

This role is expected to help build capability within the team and the local and Indigenous workforce.

You will:

  • Contribute to building a long-term local and Indigenous workforce
  • Train and mentor developing workers
  • Support skills development in the field
  • Set the tone for how work is done on the ground

This role requires patience, consistency, and the ability to teach.

Experience, Certifications and Education

Required Experience

  • 10+ years in forestry, logging, or fibre supply operations
  • Strong, direct communication skills with the ability to work effectively with crews, contractors, partners, and the management team
  • Proven experience leading, supervising, and developing crews in field-based operations
  • Demonstrated experience in fibre sourcing, harvesting, or wood flow
  • Experience working with contractors and crews
  • Experience working in smaller operations where you are expected to take on multiple responsibilities and work effectively with available resources

Education

Formal forestry education is an asset, but it is not the only path into this role.

Looking for someone with one of the following:

  • Forestry diploma
  • Forestry degree
  • Technical forestry training
  • Strong equivalent field experience

If you have built your experience in the bush, on the road, around log decks, with crews, contractors, or fibre operations, we want to hear from you.

Relevant field experience will be considered in place of formal education.

Technical Experience (Must Have Some of the Following)

  • Understanding of harvesting, hauling, and delivery logistics
  • Timber cruising and evaluation
  • Log scaling or strong familiarity with scaling practices
  • Log quality control and optimization
  • Waste and residue assessment

Certifications and Tickets (Assets)

  • RPF or RFT designation
  • Accredited Timber Evaluator (ATE)
  • Certified Timber Cruiser (ATC)
  • BC Scaling Licence
  • Waste & Residue Survey Experience (BC Coastal)
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 (OFA 1)

Candidates are not expected to have all of the above but must demonstrate practical working knowledge across the fibre lifecycle.

Required for This Role

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
  • Currently living in, or willing to relocate to, Northern Vancouver Island within the Regional District of Mount Waddington.
  • Available for regular field-based work, travel within the operating area, and active engagement with local operations, contractors, crews, and communities.

Applications that do not meet these requirements may be flagged during the initial screening process.

The Opportunity

  • Base salary range of $100,000 to $125,000 CAD
  • Performance-based bonus
  • Vehicle allowance
  • Opportunity to help build a long-term fibre program
  • Hands-on role with direct impact on operations, people, and community
